The village wakes up at sunrise.  Then we enjoy a delicious breakfast of fry bread and eggs, with local tea or coffee.  We then depart on a 3 -5 hour (it depends on how fast you are) trek through the jungle; crossing streams, climbing hills and enjoying the beauty that surrounds you.  Your Embera guide will bring you back to the village in time for a traditional lunch.   You will have some free time to purchase any of their exquisite hand woven baskets, plates or masks made from palm leaf fibers or Cocobolo wood (rosewood) or Tagua nut carvings before departing around 1:30pm; filled with warm memories and many new friendships among the Emberá people.

Emberá Village Tours & More

Many people who take our Day Tour wish they had chosen the Overnight Tour instead.  After spending time with the Emberá people you will never want to leave!  We have three exciting options to choose from.

1) The traditional overnight tour:
You adventure begins when one of our friendly and knowledgeable guides comes to pick you up at your Panama City hotel around 7:30 -8:00AM and drive for about an hour or so to the boat ramp where the Embera' meet us with their dugout canoe. Then we go upriver, so please bring a raincoat for possible spray from the water. Along the way you can view the beautiful flora and fauna of the area. Upon arrival in the village, you will receive a traditional greeting of music and all the villagers welcoming you to their community. Afterwards, you have some free time to wander around and explore the village on your own, and then you are given a short presentation about the Embera' culture and traditions and their crafts.  After the presentation, a delicious lunch of either fish or chicken and patacones (fried plantains) is served.  After lunch, you are given more free time to wander around, purchase any of their exquisite crafts or receive a temporary tattoo or have a conversation with the Embera' people. Finally, the villagers perform some of their traditional shamanic and celebratory dances and music.
After all the formal presentations, you are given time to relax, sit in a hammock, swim in the river, observe village life, play with the kids, have a conversation with the villagers, walk around the village to see their houses, garden and farm.  You can have the fun experience of helping to harvest your dinner.   You may want to take the opportunity to help prepare dinner as well.  Before dinner, we go to our tambo; which is a traditional Embera house, made of palm leave and wood. (Note: is a group share tambo with individual mats). You will be served a delicious dinner of stewed chicken over rice (subject to availability). After dinner, relax around a campfire listening to the music and chatting with villagers. You can even join in the dancing.  Soon after we settle in for the night. You will be provided with a sleeping pad and sheets, sleeping as the Emberá do.  You will fall asleep listening to the gentle and soothing sounds of the village settling in for the night and the jungle noises. The village wakes up at sunrise, it is not required that you do so, but you can observe the morning routine from the comfort of your bed in your own hut. We usually get up and take our morning bath in the refreshing river and then are served a delicious breakfast of fry bread and eggs, with local tea or coffee. After a leisurely morning, we head back to the city before lunch; arriving in the early afternoon.  You will be filled with warm memories and many new friendships among the Emberá people.
